Peaky Blinders Wiki

Inspector Sergeant Moss is a police officer from Birmingham. He served his country in France during the War.

Character History[]

Series 1 · 1919[]

Sergeant Moss resents the increasing corruption in his force but slowly builds more and more resentment towards Inspector Campbell as he disagrees with Campbell’s methods. He is initially Campbell's right hand man.

Series 2 · 1922[]

Despite his earlier opinions, not only is he in the pocket of the Peaky Blinders, but he also represents the head of the local police and is often seen being bribed to drop an investigation or even ensure patrols are not held in certain areas.

Series 3 · 1924[]

Moss continues to assist the Peaky Blinders endeavours and performs somewhat illegal dealings for what he believes is the greater good.

Partway though the series, Moss can be seen without his Sergeant's tapes, but displaying a single pip on his epaulette. Although never explicitly mentioned, at this point, he is believed to be the rank of Station Inspector. In the last episode Moss can be seen with two pips on his epaulette.

Series 4 • 1925-1926[]

In the second episode, we see Moss with two pips on his epaulettes. He introduces himself as "Inspector Moss."

Moss finally asserts his authority when furiously breaks up the gunfight between Thomas Shelby and Luca Changretta and his henchmen. Moss arrives with a host of armed policemen and declares that the Rule of Law is finally being restored. He also makes it clear to Tommy that he is no longer on the Shelby payroll.

Personality[]

Moss is sarcastic, critical, and often irritable. While he generally appears to be on the Peaky Blinders' payroll as of the beginning of Series 2, he is far from being their stooge. He will act against them if ordered to by his superiors. But on the whole, Moss comes across as reasonably friendly with the Shelby family, though not comfortable at all with their more violent antics. Overall, Moss is a lot more upstanding and competent than many of his fellow policemen. He genuinely dislikes naked corruption and is disgusted by Campbell's hypocrisy when he allows Billy Kimber's men to enter Birmingham heavily armed in an attempt to take out the Peaky Blinders. While Moss does take the occasional bribe and give the Shelby's the odd tip-off, he's far from being a truly corrupt cop.

Quotes[]

"We are regular police officers, sir, not spies. We can only act when a crime has been committed."
"I'm a police officer Tommy, I'm a fucking police officer!"
